Roof cleaning in Windle

Roofs out here run from slate over the older terraces around Dentons Green to concrete tile on the Windlehurst semis and the newer estates off Rainford Road, with a few big farmhouse roofs on the lanes thrown in. The open ground means plenty of wind and rain, but sheltered pitches behind hedges and mature trees never really dry, so moss beds build deep. We scrape the moss off by hand, treat the tiles to kill the spores left behind, and clear the gutters before we go.

Roof cleaning across Windle

Slate and porous tile only ever get a hand scrape and a gentle treatment from us, never raw pressure, so the roof keeps its surface while the moss goes.

Windle sits on gently rising ground north of St Helens, open enough to catch the weather rolling in across the Mersey basin but broken up by hedgerows, mature gardens and the woodland around Carr Mill Dam to the east. Farmland holds moisture, tree cover holds shade, and between them they keep roofs, drives and render damp for days at a stretch through autumn and winter. That is why moss and green algae come back quickest on north-facing pitches and tree-shaded plots out here, and why we treat the growth properly rather than just rinsing it off.
