Haydock sits on flat, low-lying ground between St Helens and Ashton-in-Makerfield, and much of its green space is reclaimed colliery land, with Lyme and Wood Pits Country Park grown over the old spoil south of the village. Flat ground drains slowly, the Mersey basin keeps the air damp most of the year, and the tree belts around the park and the racecourse throw long shade. Put those together and moss, green algae and black lichen come back fast on any roof, drive or wall that faces away from the sun.
