Merseyside gives us plenty of all of it. The terraced streets around Prescot and St Helens are solid Victorian brick, and south Liverpool is full of the red sandstone walls and gate pillars the area was built from. Both are older and softer than they look, which is exactly why the cleaning method matters.
How we clean it
- Read the wall. We identify the brick or stone, check the age and state of the mortar, and work out whether the staining is algae, lichen, moss or grime.
- Protect what’s next to it. Borders, plants and paths get wetted down or covered before anything else happens.
- Apply the soft wash. A low-pressure cleaning solution goes onto the surface and breaks down the growth at the root, with no blasting involved.
- Dwell and gentle rinse. The solution is left to work, then rinsed off at controlled low pressure so the brick face and the mortar joints come through untouched.
The problem with jet washing a wall
A wall looks like the toughest thing in the garden, so people assume a jet wash is fair game. On modern engineering brick it might be. On a hundred-year-old frontage in Prescot or a sandstone garden wall in Woolton it’s asking for trouble: pitted faces, blown pointing and open joints that let rain straight into the wall, often followed by a repointing bill that costs more than the clean. Soft washing avoids every bit of that. The solution kills the algae, moss and lichen chemically, the staining rinses away gently, and because the growth dies at the root the wall stays clean far longer than a quick blast would manage.
Why it matters
Algae and moss hold damp against masonry, and lichen slowly etches into the surface it sits on. A wall that stays wet through a Merseyside winter weathers faster, and moss rooting into tired mortar levers the joints apart over time. Cleaning it off keeps the wall shedding water the way it should, which protects everything behind it.
