Tarmac Cleaning

Tarmac driveways and paths cleaned across Prescot, St Helens and Knowsley. Moss, weeds and green algae removed with the pressure set low enough to leave the surface alone.

What we clean

Blastaway Pressure Washing Services cleans tarmac and asphalt across Prescot, Whiston, Huyton, St Helens and the surrounding towns. Driveways, garden paths, front paths on older terraced streets, shared drives and communal parking areas. Plenty of the interwar semis around Knowsley still have their original tarmac drive out front, and most have never had a proper clean.

How we clean tarmac

Tarmac needs more care than people expect. It is stone chippings held together with bitumen, which makes it softer than concrete or block paving, and a powerful jet held in one spot will pick the chippings straight out of it. So the pressure comes down, the nozzle opens out to a wide fan and the lance keeps moving the whole time.

Before any washing, moss and weeds get cleared by hand and lance, including growth rooted into cracks and along the edges where the drive meets the wall. Then the whole surface is washed in even passes so the finish comes up uniform rather than striped, and any oil marks get a targeted degreaser. Everything is rinsed off and the drive left tidy.

Why it matters

A mossy tarmac drive is a slip risk, especially the shaded strip near the house that never dries out through a Merseyside winter. Moss and weeds also do slow damage: roots work into the surface, cracks widen, and water gets in and freezes. Cleaning breaks that cycle and takes the drive from patchy grey and green back to an even, dark surface.

The other reason is simple economics. Relaying tarmac is a big spend, and in most cases a tired drive in Prescot, Huyton or St Helens is a candidate for power washing long before it is a candidate for replacement. A controlled clean shows you what you are actually working with underneath the moss.

Tarmac cleaning FAQ

Straight answers to the things people ask us about tarmac cleaning around Prescot and Merseyside.

Can tarmac be pressure washed safely?

Yes, as long as whoever is holding the lance respects the surface. Tarmac is stone chippings bound with bitumen, softer than concrete or block paving, and a narrow jet held close will dig into it. We wash tarmac with the pressure turned down and a wide fan nozzle, keeping the lance moving the whole time, which shifts the moss and grime while the surface stays put.

Will you loosen the chippings on my drive?

We check the age and condition of the tarmac before any water goes near it, then set the pressure to suit. Worn tarmac sheds loose chippings under heavy pressure, so we stay moderate and never dwell on one spot. If a drive is already breaking up we say so at the quote rather than washing it and hoping.

Can you get moss off tarmac?

Yes. Moss on tarmac gets cleared by hand and lance as part of every job, including the growth rooted into cracks and along the edges. A shaded drive in Merseyside will green up again eventually, that’s just the climate, but a proper moss removal gives you a clear surface to start from and makes the next clean a smaller job.

Do oil stains come out of tarmac?

Sometimes fully, sometimes partly. We treat oil marks with a targeted degreaser, and fresh spills usually respond well. Oil that has soaked deep into old tarmac tends to fade rather than vanish, and we would rather tell you that before we start than promise a result we can’t deliver.

How much does tarmac cleaning cost in Prescot?

It depends on the size of the drive or path, how much moss and weed growth there is, and the condition of the tarmac itself, so we price every job on its own.

Do you clean tarmac near me?

We’re based in Prescot and cover Knowsley, St Helens, east and south Liverpool, Widnes and most places within roughly 15 miles. If you’re searching for tarmac cleaning or jet washing near me anywhere across that patch, send your postcode and we’ll confirm we cover you.

Is cleaning worth it, or does my tarmac need replacing?

Most greyed, mossy tarmac drives clean up far better than owners expect, and cleaning costs a lot less than digging up and relaying a drive. If we look at yours and think the surface is genuinely failing, we’ll tell you straight instead of taking the job.
