The long, narrow gardens behind terraced streets around here are a classic case: at least one fence line gets next to no sun, sits damp from October to April, and greens up faster than the rest of the garden put together.
How we clean a fence
Fence panels are among the most delicate things we wash. Most are thin, some are decades old, and a strong jet at close range will splinter them. So the method leans gentle.
A quick test on a hidden section tells us how the timber behaves. Then a timber-safe cleaning solution goes on to kill the algae and mould, followed by a low-pressure wash that lifts the growth, the dirt and the loose grey layer off the surface. Where the timber is thick and sound we can bring the pressure up a touch, but we never blast a fence.
Plants and borders along the fence line get covered or worked around, and the whole area is rinsed down before we leave.
Why bother cleaning a fence
Two reasons. First, algae and mould hold water against the timber, and wet timber rots. A fence that stays green all year fails years earlier than one that gets cleaned. Second, staining. Stain will not bond to dirty, green or flaking timber; it blotches and peels within a season. Cleaning first means the new coat goes onto sound, even wood and actually lasts.
