Most decked gardens round here see little sun through winter, and the damp air off the Mersey keeps timber wet for weeks at a time. That is exactly the environment algae likes, which is why so many decks in Merseyside are green by February and stay that way until somebody cleans them.
How we clean decking
Timber and composite need different handling, so the job starts with working out what the deck is made of and what condition it is in.
On sound timber we apply a cleaning solution that breaks down the algae and any mould sitting in the grain, then wash the boards with low, controlled pressure, working along the grain rather than across it. Older or softer boards get a gentler soft wash instead, because a hard jet on tired timber roughs up the surface and there is no undoing that.
Composite boards get a soft wash only. They do not need pressure and most manufacturers advise against it, so we lift the grime with the right solution and a thorough rinse.
The gaps and grooves get cleared out too, not just the tops of the boards. That is where wet leaves and muck collect, and it is where the slippery film starts.
After the clean
A freshly cleaned timber deck is the ideal base for a coat of oil. Once the boards have dried properly the oil soaks in evenly, the colour comes back and the timber gets some protection against the next Merseyside winter.
